Shop Independent This Christmas

Here are 3 reasons to shop independents this X'mas. Go figure the rest out yourself because if you need more convincing, you're at the wrong URL.
WE ACTUALLY FIGHT TO BRING YOU OUR WARES
Yes we do. Do you know the risk we take to quit our corporate 9 to 5s to do this? Even for the lucky few who are born with a silver spoon in their mouths, it takes guts and brains and a special something to actually push through the rough terrain to make things happen. Besides the faux envy that many bring, sourcing and making our wares is really more stressful than fun, more laborious than glamorous and definitely more painful than instagram photos make it out to be. Of course we enjoy what we do but there are definitely more times we feel like throwing in the towel than you know. Because unlike the big corporates that have a team of pawns for each critical department, we are it, every single job, every single day, from storeman to public relations to designer to human resources to janitor. We are IT.
WE BRING YOU WHAT H&M AND TOPSHOP CAN'T
Don't get us wrong, we shop at H&M and Topshop too but more often, we prefer paying for something special. It's called individuality. It's called ethically controlled production. It's called chances-are-1000-other-people-will-probably-not-be-wearing-the-same-thing-as-you-on-the-streets.
YOU FUEL THE NEXT GENERATION OF CREATIVE INDEPENDENTS
It's hard to survive as independent businesses without bottomless pits of the credit and cash flow needed to feed the growing rent and inflation. Many unique and valuable (for the escape of a cookie cutter world) independents don't survive the pressure of the influence that MNCs have on the economy. If you want to see more than GAP in every single city, you don't have a choice but to buy independent.
So here's what we fought to bring you this X'mas. You're welcome.
Yes we shipped concrete all the way from Boston Massachusetts. No it wasn't heavy at all. In fact, DHL told us that it was pretty light so I guess it's gonna feel alright when you wear them to finish your #ootd. Handcrafted by an architect and designer, these concrete pieces of jewellery are hand-cast, buffed and polished to retain it's bubbles, imperfections and individual beauty.
CHALK is a juxtaposition of concrete - a material typically rough and crude - metal and design intended to question our perception of precious and delicate jewellery. We stand questioned. And in awe.
Needless to say, we unearthed some crazy local talents for your perusal as well. Priced well enough for us to buy a couple of pieces at a time to layer and stack, we're super in love. MOJAK encapsulates objects in gold, silver, matte black and white for a surreal edge. Furreal.
MOJAK's free play of accessories makes living in this century so damn exciting.
A Singaporean designer of womens and menswear label A.K.A Wayward, Mun Foong has no formal training in apparel or jewellery design. Prior to starting her label, she worked at advertising agencies and design firms. She’s an eyeliner freak, accessory bandit and swears by sneakers.
STACK by A.K.A Wayward began with a single bracelet in 2012 and the rest as they say, is history. At STACK, they mean it when they say that they get their hands dirty. Every single piece is handcrafted (at their studio in Singapore) with curiously invented knots like the Larva, and no one piece is the same.
STACK is constructed with leather, waxed and nylon multi-plait cords, semi-precious stones, stainless steel, rhodium and gold plated solid brass hardware. Taking cues from it's apparel line A.K.A Wayward, STACK produces statement pieces that capture a sense of humour by urbanizing classics with a modern twist.
They take great pride in what they do and they genuinely love it. Made in Singapore. Made for you.
We do have one final Singaporean label on it's way and we promise that it will be well worth the wait. For now, we leave you with the 8 necklaces - meticulously handcrafted with leather and beautifully complex rutile, agate and other semi-precious gems - that we hold closest to our heart this Christmas. A CAVALIER collaboration with STACK, inspired by the wild earth and named after serene but volatile deserts, these precious 8 signify what we independents are truly about. We're sure this is enough reason to shop independent this Christmas and thereafter.
